Q&A

To become a Canadian citizen, you must

● Become a permanent resident

●You have lived in Canada for 3 of the last 5 years

● Taxes have been filed, if you need them

●Pass a test about your rights, responsibilities and knowledge of Canada

● Prove your language skills

Depending on your situation, there may be additional requirements.

You can apply for Canadian citizenship again.  This new application must include all required forms and documents, including the new application fee.  There is no waiting period before you can reapply.  However, you should ensure that you meet the requirements for Canadian citizenship before reapplying.

If your application for citizenship is denied, you can also seek a judicial review of the decision in the Federal Court of Canada.  This is not an appeal of that decision.  You have thirty (30) days from the date on the rejection letter to apply.

You can't. Being married to a Canadian citizen does not give you citizenship.

If you want to become a Canadian citizen, you must follow the same steps as everyone else. There are no special procedures for spouses of Canadian citizens.

Under Canadian law, you can be a Canadian citizen and a citizen of another country at the same time.

However, if you become a Canadian citizen, some countries will not let you retain their citizenship.

The consulate or embassy of your other country of nationality can tell you if this applies to you.

Yes.  After we receive your application, you may leave Canada.

If you need to leave Canada and wish to retain your eligibility for Canadian citizenship, you must:

Make sure you have lived in Canada long enough to maintain your Permanent resident (PR) status

● Become a permanent resident (when you apply)

● You will not lose your permanent resident status until you take the oath of citizenship

● Bring your Permanent Resident card with you when you leave Canada so you can easily return

Make sure your Permanent Resident card does not expire while you are outside of Canada.

We usually only mail letters, notices and other documents to addresses in Canada.  In some cases, you may receive an email from us.  You must respond to these letters or emails within the specified time.  If you do not respond within the time limit and do not provide an acceptable reason for not being able to make an appointment with us or provide the requested information, we may stop processing your application.
